46 Brooklands Gardens 11 November 2008 - 1 February 2009
An offsite work, located in Jaywick, Essex Firstsite is delighted to present a major new commission by international artist Nathan Coley. 46 Brooklands Gardens is a temporary sculpture sited in the Brooklands estate in Jaywick, a coastal town in Essex. Two years in the making, 46 Brooklands Gardens formally references the extraordinary architectural context in which it is situated. Nathan's on-going enquiry into the ways in which the values of a society are reflected in the architectural infastructure of towns and cities, is manifested here in the form of a bold and uncompromising sculpture. 46 Brooklands Gardens is located on an empty plot, which takes the form of a Jaywick chalet. Its home-made aesthetic directly references the surrounding architecture, while its barricade-like form establishes a dialogue with the people and perception of the town. After visiting various Essex towns, including Frinton and Walton, he chose to work in the Brooklands area of Jaywick. His response to the place was immediate and in particular to the way the history and local community is expressed through its architecture. The scale and shape of the work is dictated by the shape of the plot and adjacent houses and the interior paint colours have been drawn from surrounding buildings. Visiting Information 46 Brooklands Gardens is located in the heart of the Brooklands estate (CO15 2JP) and can be accessed everyday throughout the period 11 November 2008 - 1 February 2009.
